What does the term "SEER rating" refer to?
The efficiency of central air conditioners is rated according to their Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER).
The SEER rating is the BTU of cooling output during a typical cooling season divided by the total electric energy input in watt-hours during the same period. The higher the SEER rating of a unit, the more energy efficient it is. Many older systems have SEER ratings of 10 or less.
The minimum SEER allowed today is 13. Installing a system with a high SEER rating will save you money and reduce your energy usage.

What is the difference between an R-22 and a R-410A Puron system?
R-22 refers to Freon, the refrigerant gas used to cool the air in air conditioners.
The federal Clean Air Act called for a mandatory phase-out of the production and use of many ozone-depleting substances, including R-22, with a total ban on production and importation going into effect by 2020. Puron is a brand name for a refrigerant called R-410A. It is nonflammable, nontoxic, and has less effect on the atmospheric ozone than Freon. 410-A Puron systems are the most widely accepted alternative to R-22 Freon systems.

Puron Refrigerant:
Puron® Refrigerant is an environmentally sound refrigerant designed not to harm the earth's ozone layer. Federal law requires all manufacturers phase out ozone depleting refrigerants in the next few years. Puron Refrigerant is approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency as a replacement from R-22.

How often should I change the air filter in my system?
Check it at least every month during peak use, and replace it when it looks dirty enough to impair the air flow through it. Some filters, such as media filters or electronic air cleaners, are washable; others are disposable and must be replaced.
